What is the difference between a static and dynamic IP address?

A dynamic IP address is a temporary address that is automatically assigned to a device when it connects to a network and continually changes over time. Whereas a static IP address remains constant and is manually configured.

Both IP addresses are reliable, however, depending on your specific needs, you may require one over the other.

  Static IP Dynamic IP
Advantages
  • Ideal for accessing your home or business network remotely.
  • Necessary for hosting websites, email servers, VOIP, online games or any other services that require a consistent address.
  • Frequent IP changes make it harder for malicious actors to target your device.
  • No need for manual configuration
Disadvantages
  • Easier for hackers to target since the IP address doesn't change.
  • Not suitable for services that require a constant IP address.
  • IP address changes can cause brief interruptions in connectivity.
