Why do unplanned internet outages occur?

Unplanned outages can be caused by –

  1. Weather: Extreme weather-related events such as fires, storms or cyclones can cause physical damage to internet infrastructure causing an nbn® outage. FTTN and FTTC internet services which utilise copper wiring can also be heavily impacted by rain, with rain causing interference or blocking internet connection.

  2. Congestion: When too many people are using the internet network at the same time it can cause a gridlock and for no one to be able to get or stay connected acting as an outage.

  3. Power outages: Power outages which are commonly caused by extreme weather can damage powerlines or cause them to short out. Any equipment connected via the internet network will not work during a power outage. If you have a FTTP connection, you may have a battery backup enabling you to stay connected.

  4. Infrastructure and Equipment damage: You could have a faulty modem, internet connection box or cabling in your house. There could also be damaged internet infrastructure that needs to be repaired. We ask that you please contact our team to arrange for new equipment or an internet technician.
